Born in 1943 in Guwahati, Assam, Shri Dulal Roy graduat- ed from the National School of Drama, Delhi, in 1966 and later obtained a diploma in film- editing from the Film and Television Institute, Pune, in 1970. An eminent theatre director, he has over fifty productions in Assamese to his credit including Pygmalion, Yerma, House of Bernada Alba, Inspector Gene- ral, Waiting for Godot and Andha Yug. He has also authored a number of plays in Assamese, many of which have been translated into other Indian languages. His work is experi- mental in nature, and has led to further experimentation in the theatre of Assam. He is also well- known as an actor. Simultaneously, Shri Dulal Roy has pursued a creative career in cinema and worked with Rajinder Singh Bedi, Asit Sen and Hrishikesh Mukherjee in major productions. He has also directed and written the screenplays for a couple of films. Shri Dulal Roy is currently working as Joint Director in the Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Assam. Among other honours, he received the Natya Bhaskar Samman in 1991. Shri Dulal Roy receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Indian theatre as a director.
