Born in 1948 in Mumbai, Shri Suresh Talwalkar received his training in Tabla from illustrious gurus like Shri Pandharinath Nageshkar and Vinayakrao Ghangrekar of the Munir Khan Saheb and Nanasaheb Panse gharanas. He further honed his art and learnt the intricacies of rhythm from the Mridangam masestro Shri Ramnad Ishwaran. For many years, he trained in Hindustani vocal music under Shri Gajananbua Joshi and Nivruttibua Sarnaik. One of our finest solo Tabla players today, Shri Talwalkar has distinguished himself on the concert platform; he has an eclectic style combining the best of various schools of percussion art. He has also successfully accompanied a large number of eminent musicians, dancers, vocalists and instrumentalists. His perfor- mances are marked by fine technique and imaginative improvisations. Shri Suresh Talwalkar has played a significant role as a teacher, and has trained a large number of young Tabla players including Shri Vijay Ghate and Trilok Gurtu among others. He has also initiated Western drummers into Tabla music. He has to his credit a number of audio-cassettes of his art. Among other honours, he received the All India Radio Award in 1966. Shri Suresh Talwalkar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani instrumental music.
