Born on 8 January 1965 in Kolkata, Shri Deb Sankar Halder is a much-in-demand theatre actor of Kolkata. His father Avoy Halder was an actor of Bengali Jatra and his brother Amiya Halder is also an actor with a leading theatre group Bohurupee, Kolkata. So in spite of obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Science from the University of Calcutta, Shri Deb Sankar Halder chose acting as his career.
Starting from being a participant in a Nandikar workshop in 1986 under Shri Rudraprasad Sengupta and Swatilekha Sengupta, he went on to become a trainer with Nandikar and a main actor with the group for numerous productions. Some of the major productions with the Nandikar theatre group where he played leading roles include: Football, Ei Sahar Ei Samay, Feriwalar Mrityu, Sojan Badier Ghat, Anto Aadi Anto, and Nachni. Later, he worked for many productions outside Nandikar also. Acclaimed for his versatile performances, Shri Halder received critical acclaim for many of his portrayals such as of Debbrata Biswas in Ruddha Sangeet, Swami Vivekananda in Biley, and Sisir Kumar Bhaduri in Nisshanga Samrat. Some other productions outside Nandikar include Mephisto with Chetana; Aurangzeb, Dharmashok with Rangapat; Dahananto with Sudrak; Shahjahan, Agantuk with Nataranga; Oedipus with Drishyapat; Gora with Abhash; Duto Din with Pancham Vaikik; and Jharer Pakhi with Natyaranga to name a few. He has participated in many international festivals in the U.S.A., as well as in the United Kingdom. He has also given lecture-demonstrations on acting in Georgia University in Athens, Georgia, U.S.A.; Edinburgh Festival Theatre, Scotland; and International Dance and Theatre Festival, Goteborg, Sweden. Shri Halder has also worked in some audio drama albums. He has also directed many plays among which about 40 plays are with schoolchildren. Shri Halder has also worked in numerous telefilms, tele-serials and Bangla movies.
Shri Deb Sankar Halder receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2014 for his contribution to Indian theatre as an actor.
