Sangeeta Dash



Born on 24 April 1966 in Cuttack in Odisha, Shrimati Sangeeta Dash received her t raining in Odissi dance under Durga Charan Ranbir and later Debaprasad Das at the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Bhubaneswar. She has also received training in Hindustani music under Chittaranjan Pani, and holds a Master's degree in philosophy.
Shrimati Sangeeta Dash is today acknowledged as a leading exponent of the style of Odissi dance created by her guru Debaprasad Das. She has developed and propagated this style after his untimely demise. She has performed at various dance festivals in the country such as the Konark Dance Festival, the Khajuraho Dance Festival, the Soorya Festival at Thiruvananthapuram, the Natyanjali Festival at Chidambaram, the International Odissi Dance Festival in Bhubaneswar, and Sangeet Natak Akademi's Nritya Pratibha, Nritya Sangam, and Award Festivals at various locations. She has travelled abroad performing in Nepal, Bangladesh, China, North Korea, Germany, West Indies, and the United States. Up to the mid-1980s, Shrimati Sangeeta Dash worked closely with her guru Debaprasad Das demonstrating features of Odissi dance at his lectures. Subsequently, she has presented lecture-demonstrations on her own and has con ducted a number of workshops. Some of these events have been held in Singapore, Bahrain, France, Italy, Belgium, and Germany.
Shrimati Sangeeta Dash is also an accomplished actress in the Odiya cinema. Her films include Dora (1983),Jai Phoola (1983), School Master (1984), Baje Bansi Nache Ghoongroo (1985), Bidhira Bidhana (1989), and Kalia Bharasa(1990). She has received the award for Best Supporting Actress from the Art and Culture Department of the Government of Odisha and the Cine Critic Association for her role in Paap Punya (1987).
For her work in dance, Shrimat i Sangeeta Dash has been honoured with the Mahari Samman conferred by the Guru Pankaj Charan Das Foundation, Bhubaneswar (1998), the Sanskriti Samman presented by the Sanskriti Pratisthan, New Delhi (1999), and the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2003).
