Born on 23 April 1957 in New Delhi, Shrimati Uma Dogra received her initial training in Kathak dance under the guidance of Shri Bansi Lal, and at the Kathak Kendra under Shrimati Reba Vidyarthi. Later, she specialized in the art form under Pandit Durga Lal of the Jaipur gharana of Kathak at the Shri Ram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, New Delhi. She has also studied Hindustani music under her father, Shri Motiram Sharma.
Shrimati Uma Dogra has established herself as a leading performer of Kathak dance, as well as a dedicated teacher and a choreographer. She has also performed Kathak dance at various prestigious festivals. She has also conducted lecture-demonstrations and workshops at several universities and institutions in countries such as Canada and the United States of America. Besides teaching dance at her institution, Uma Dogra’s School of Kathak in Mumbai, she has also taught at the Pandit Jasraj School of Music, Atlanta in the United States of America. She has authored and published a book on Kathak dance titled In Praise of Kathak. Shrimati Dogra has produced and also performed in the film on Pandit Durga Lal titled Nirvana through Dance. She has also done several choreographies for films and television serials such as Meerabai and Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Shrimati Dogra founded the Sam Ved Society for Performing Arts in Mumbai, and continues to work for the promotion of the performing arts. Among other honours, Shrimati Uma Dogra has received the Maharashtra Sanskritik Rajkiya Puruskar bestowed by the Government of Maharashtra in 2009.
