Kishori Amonkar



Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 1985 Music - Hindustani - Vocal Smt. Kishori Amonkar was born in 1931 in Bombay. She received her training in music from her mother, Smt. Mogubai Kurdikar, an eminent disciple of the late Khansaheb Alladiya Khan of the Jaipur Gharana. Smt. Amonkar is a leading exponent of Khayal and semiclassical forms of Hindustani Music, particularly devotional songs. Trained in the rigorous tradition of her Gharana, she has assimilated the best in other Gharanas as well to evolve a style that is conventional in technique yet highly individual in spirit. She has also researched on Indian music and conducted seminars and workshops on the subject. Smt. Amonkar has performed widely within the country and has some popular records to her credit. Her most recent appearances abroad were in the course of the Festivals of India in the U.S.A. and France. For her eminence in the field of Music and her contribution to its enrichment, Smt. Kishori Amonkar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani Vocal Music for 1985.
