Born on 10 May 1949 in Balasore in Odisha, Shri Bankim Sethi received his initial training in Odissi music
under his brother Gangadhar Set hi. At a later stage, he was groomed by renowned masters of the music
such as Singhari Shyamsundar Kar, Markandey Mahapatra, and Balkrishna Dash.At the Utkal Sangeet
Mahavidyalaya, Bhubaneswar, he gained an acquaintance also with Hindustani and Carnatic music.
Shri Bankim Sethi started his career as a music director in the Utkal Theatre of Orissa in the mid- 1960s. Afterwards, he gravitated towards dance music. He has made his mark in this sphere com posing music for leading Odissi dancers such as Sonal Mansingh, Kiran Segal, Madhavi Mudgal, Aloka Paniker, and Ranjana Gauhar. Since the time he moved to Delhi, he has worked as music guru at the Jagan nath Cultural Centre, as General Secreta ry of the Odissi Sangeet Sabha, and as music director at the P.P. Kala Niketan. He is now Principal of the Cent re for Classical Dances in New Delhi. An accomplished singer, Shri Sethi has rendered his compositions on stage accompanying dancers at venues around the world. Pursuing his core interest, he has at the same time researched in forms of Odissi music such as Champu, Chaupadi and Chautisha with the help of a Senior Research Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. He is now preparing books of notation for Odissi music and dance, as well as a textbook for music students. He has composed music for scores of dance-dramas in various languages, and has also lent his voice in Oriya films such as Darubrahma Surya and Shrikshetra. Through the Odissi Sangeet Sabha which he founded in 1972, he continues to work for the promotion of Odissi music.
Shri Sethi has received several honou rs for his work. These include the title of Surmani from the Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai (1988), and the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2010).
