Bhimsen Joshi



I present to you, Sir, Shri Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi.
Shri Joshi was born in 1922. He is acknowledged as one of the very eminent Hindustani vocalists of our time.
Shri Bhimsen Joshi received his training in music from Mushtaq Hussain Khan, of Rampur, and from Rambhau Kundgolkar, popularly known as Sawai Gandharva.
Shri Bhimsen Joshi is noted for his extraordinarily rich and sonorous voice and for the warmth and sensitivity of his rendering. His forte is Khyal- singing of the Kirana Gharana, but he is equally at ease with the Thumri, Pada and devotional and stage songs. He has created a number of new raginis, given composition for musical plays and also done singing for films.
Shri Joshi has received the Mysore State Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Padma Shri.
For his eminence in the field of Music and his contribution to its enrichment Shri Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani Vocal Music.
