Born on 3 April 1947 in Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, Shri 0.S. Thiagarajan received his initial tra ining in Camatic music from his father OV Subraman iam. He was further groomed in the art by Lalgudi G. Jayaram an and TM. Thiagarajan .
A leading vocalist today in the field of Carnatic music, Shri Thiagarajan is also a teacher of long standing. He has worked for many years at Annamalai University, serving finally as Head of the Department of Music and Dean of the Faculty of Fine Art s (2002-2007). He has also guided scholars at the Mother Teresa University, Chennai. In pursuance of pedagogic interests, he has conducted workshops and seminars on music at several institutions. He has per formed with distinction at music festivals at home and abroad. He has performed on All India Radio and Doordarshan for many years.
For his service to music, Shri O.S. Thiagara jan has been awarded titles by several institutions working in the field of Carnatic music. These honours include the Sangeetha Choodamani bestowed by the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai; the Sangeetha Kala Sagara conferred by Kalasagara, Hyderabad; the Nada Gana Kala Praveena awarded by Sangeetha Samrajya, Madurai; and the Nada Booshanam conferred by the Shanmukhananda Sangeetha Sabha, Mumbai.
Shri O.S. Thiagar jan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Carnatic vocal music.
