Born in 1928, Shri Kavalam Narayana Panikkar started writing poems from his young age. A Law Graduate of Madras University, he practised from 1955 to 1961. For a decade he served as the Secretary of Kerala Sangeet Natak Akademi. Shri Panikkar has several plays to his credit inspired by folk and classical traditions and has translated many English and Sanskrit plays into Malayalam. His production of Bhasa’s Madhyama Vyayoga brought him into prominence and later, Bhasa’s Dootavakyam and Urubhangam, Kalidasa’s Vikramorvasiyam and Shakunt- alam were a few of his produc- tions which distinguished him as a director in India and abroad. He is the recipient of many awards including Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for pIaywriting. His work is noted for the imaginative use of Kathakali, Koodiyattam and other tradi- tional forms in theatre. For his eminence in the field of theatre and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Kavalam Narayana Panikkar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Direction for 1983.
