K. P. Kittappa Pillai



I present to you, Sir, Shri Tanjavur K.P. Kittappa. Shri Kittappa comes of the illustrious family of music and dance masters that produced the celebrated Tanjore Quartette, or the famous four brothers who were attached to the Court of Raja Serboji II and who gave Bharata Natyam its present form and stage format. Shri Kittappa received his training in Bharata Natyam and music from his father Tanjavur K. Ponniah Pillai and from his grandfather Pandanallur Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai. Shri Kittappa has been Principal of the College of Tamil Isai of Tamil Isai Sangam. He has also worked at the Darpana Academy, Ahmedabad. Shri Kittappa has been largely responsible for reviving the Navasandhi aspect of Bharata Natyam in our time. He is also the author of four books on Bharata Natyam and Music. For his eminence in the field of Dance and his contribution to its enrichment Shri Kittappa receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Bharata Natyam.
