I present to you, Sir, Sri Habib Tanvir. Sri Habib Tanvir was born in Raipur, Madhya Pradesh in 1923. Sri Tanvir showed artistic talent at a very early age and began writing poetry and acting in plays during his school days. Later his interest in the theatre developed and he was associated as actor, playwright and director with I.P.T.A. in Bombay in the late 40s and early 50s After a few years in the amateur theatre, Sri Tanvir went abroad on a Government of India scholarship and received formal theatrical training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Bristol, and the British Drama League, London. Further he became an Associate of the Drama Board, London. On his return in 1958, Sri Tanvir made Delhi his centre of activity and worked with the professional group, the Hindustani Theatre, as Director for some years and produced the famous Sanskrit classic ‘Mrichchakatika’ in a Hindi translation. Later, he organized his own theatre group, Naya Theatre and ever since has been active writing, producing and acting in plays with his group. Some of his significant productions are ‘Mitti Ki Gadi’, ‘Agra Bazar’, ‘Shatranj ke Mohra’, ‘Signet Ring’, ‘Mirza Shohrat’, ‘Merey Baad’ and ‘Rustom Sohrab’. Sri Tanvir’s productions are marked by a sense of discovery in his successful experiments in style in these experiments in style. In these experiments, he has mast creatively synthesized techni- ques and conventions both from the Indian folk and classical theatres as well as the modern theatre of the West. Sri Tanvir has also conducted short term training courses in theatre for University teachers sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and produced for them plays by modern European play- wrights like Lorca and Brecht. Apart from being an eminent director, Sri Tanvir is also a noted Urdu poet and a play- wright of great significance. His plays, ‘Agra Bazar’, ‘Merey Baad” and ‘Shatranj ke Mohre’ have been widely acclaimed. For his eminence in the field of theatre and his contribution to its development, Sri Habib Tanvir receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Direction.
