I present to you, Sir, Shri Ammanur Madhava Chakyar. Born in 1916, Shri Ammanur Madhava Chakyar comes of a family of Chakyars having a tradition of more than four centuries. Shri Ammanur Madhava Chakyar received training in the theatre art of the Chakyars, including Koothu and Koodiyattam, from his uncles Ammanur Madhava Chakyar and Ammannur Parameswara Chakyar and from other eminent masters like Kochikkava Thampuratty, Manthitta Kunju Namboodiri and Bhagavathar Kunjunni Thampuran. For several generations, family members of Shri Ammanur Madhava Chakyar have been presenting Koothu and Koodiyattam in temples of Kerala as a hereditary vocation. Shri Ammanur Madhava Chak- yar is attached to the Koodal- manikkam temple, Irinjalakuda. Shri Ammanur Madhava Chakyar was appointed Fellow by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, for teaching Koodiyattam to select pupils under the scheme for the preservation and promotion of rare forms of performing arts. For his outstanding work as a performer he has been honour-ed by religious institutions like the Shiva temple at Trichur, the temple at Ernakulam and the Koodalmanikkam temple at Irinjalakuda. For his eminence in the field of dance and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Ammanur Madhava Chakyar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Koodiyattam for 1979.
