Born on 7 September 1918 in Kamarpadia village in Assam, Professor Maheswar Neog received his early education in Sibsagar, North lakhimpur and lorhat. Later he attended Cotton College, Guwahati, and obtained his M.A. in Assamese from Calcutta University. Professor Neog started his career as Office Secretary of the Guwahati University Trust Fund in 1945. He was appointed Lecturer in Assamese, when Guwahati University was established in 1948. Later he was Professor and Head of the Department of Assamese at Guwahati. A reputed editor of early Assamese manuscripts, he is the author of a number of books on topics in cultural history, philosophy, painting, religion and the performing arts of Assam. He has also published two collections of poems. A versatile writer; a thinker, and a renowned critic, he was elected President of Assam Sahitya Sabha in 1974. Among various honours, Professor Maheswar Neog received the Padma Shri in 1974. For his contribution in the performing arts, Professor Maheswar Neog was elected Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1994. He passed away on 13 September 1995.
