Born in 1919 in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, Shrimati D. K. Pattammal received her troining in Carnotic vocal music from Sarvashri Ambi Dikshitar, T.L. Venkatarama Iyer, P. Sambamoorthy and Vidyala Narasimha Naidu. She acquired a large repertoire of contemporary compositions from Shri Papanasam Sivan and Shri Koteshwara Iyer. In a richly active career spanning five decades, Shrimati Pattammal has performed widely within the country as well as abroad. She was one of the earliest classical singers to lend her voice for playback singing in films. Among her prominent students was the eminent vocalist Shri D.K. Jayaraman. Shrimati Pattammal received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1962 and the Padma Bhushan in 1971. For her contribution to Indian music, Shrimati D.K. Pattammal is elected Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi.
