I present to you, Sir, Shri Komal Kothari. Born in 1921 in Rajasthan, Shri Komal Kothari has distinguished himself as a student of the music and folklore of Rajasthan. Over the past thirty years he has researched and documented the performing arts of the region, making notable contributions to the study of musical instruments, oral traditions and puppetry. A pioneer in his area of research, Shri Kothari has founded the Rupayan Sansthan, among the few noteworthy institutions in India for the study of folklore. Shri Komal Kothari has served as a folklore consultant to several institutions abroad and is an important Indian representative in international forums of ethnomusicology. He has published widely and been instrumental in the production of a long series of gramophone records of Rajasthani folk music. A former Secretary of the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi, Shri Kothari received the Nehru Fellowship in 1978 and the Padma Shri in 1983. For his eminence in the field of ethnomusicology and his contribution to the study of folklore, Shri Komal Kothari is elected Fellow of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
