Siya Ram Tewari



I present to you, Sir, Shri Siya Ram Tewari. Shri Siya Ram Tewari was born at Amta in Darbhanga district of Bihar, in 1919. He received his training in the Dhrupad style from his maternal grand father, Pt. Vishnu Deo Pathak of the Darbhanga Gharana. He also learnt other forms of Hindustani Music like Thumri, Dadra and Tappa from his father, Pandit Baldeo Tewari of the Gaya Gharana. One of the most outstanding exponents of the Dhrupad today, he has performed widely, both in India and abroad. Shri Tewari has played a significant role in giving a new impetus to and winning new audiences for the Dhrupad music. Shri Siya Ram Tewari was nominated as a member of the Legislative Council of the State of Bihar in 1976. He has been honoured by King Mahendra of Nepal and was awarded the Padma Shri in 1971. He has received numerous titles and awards from various art organisations. For his eminence in the field of Music and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Siya Ram Tewari has been elected Fellow of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
