Chandravadan C. Mehta



I present to you, Sir, Prof. Chandravadan C. Mehta. Prof. Mehta was born at Surat in Gujarat in 1901. A versatile theatre artiste and scholar he has written and directed a large number of plays. His plays like Aag Gadi gave a new direction to the Gujarati theatre movement. A prolific writer, he has many publications to his credit including poetry, novels, autobiography, translations and plays which is his forte. He has had the distinction of representing India at numerous theatre conferences in Europe, Africa and Asia. He was the visiting Professor at the M.S. University of Baroda and has served in academic capacities in various universities in India and abroad. His book Natya Gatharia — a study of Western drama and theatre, won for him the Sahitya Akademi Award for 1971. Prof. Mehta was awarded the Padma Shri in 1967 and received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Playwriting for 1971. For his eminence in the field of Drama and his contribution to its enrichment, Prof. C.C. Mehta has been elected Fellow of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
