Sumati Mutatkar

I present to you, Sir, Dr. (Smt.) Sumati Mutatkar. Born in 1916 in a family of jurists, Smt. Mutatkar graduated from Nagpur University. She had her initial musical training from Shri Sawla Ram of Nagpur and Pandit Wamanbua Joshi of Amravati. Later she was trained under Pandit Shrikrishna Narayana Ratanjankar, Pandit Rajabhaiyya Poonchwale of Gwalior tradition, Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan of Agra Gharana, Ustad Mushtaq Hussain Khan, and Pandit Anant Manohar Joshi. She learnt Dhrupad and Dhamar singing from Pandit Govinda Rao Burhanpurkar. A regular broadcaster over All India Radio, she has participated in its National Programmes and Sangeet Sammelans and has participated both as performer and scholar in music conferences. Formerly a Deputy Chief Producer in All India Radio, she is, at present, Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Music and Fine Arts at Delhi University. She has been associated with the Department of Culture as Investigator-in-charge for their Propagation of Culture Scheme. She is at present the Honorary Director of the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training. In recognition of her service to music and her contribution to its propagation, Smt. Sumati Mutatkar has been elected Fellow of the Akademi.
