B. Puttasamaya



I present to you, Sir, Shri B. Puttasamaya. Born in 1897 in Bangalore, Shri Puttasamaya is a distinguished playwright. He has written a number of plays and poems besides historical novels and short stories. Some of his plays and novels have also been translated Into other Indian languages. Shri Puttasamaya set new trends in Kannada Theatre. His popular play ‘Kurukshetra’ has been produced innumerable times by the well-known Gubbi troupe. Shri Puttasamaya has received many awards. These include the Central Sahitya Akademi award for his historical novel ‘Kranthi Kalyana’. the award of the Literary Division of the Mysore Government for his play ‘Kurukshetra’; he has also received awards from the Janmabhoomi Trust in 1972 and from the Journalists’ Conference in 1977. He was one of the first four writers to be honoured by the Mysore State Sahitya Akademi. In recognition of his great contribution to theatre and literature, Shri B. Puttasamaya has been elected Fellow of the Akademi.
