Semmangudi R. Srinivasa Iyer

I present to you, Sir, Semmangudi Shri R. Srinivasier. Born in 1908 in the district of Tanjavur, Shri Srinivasier is one of the most distinguished vocalists in Karnatak music today. He comes of a renowned family of musicians which includes Tirukkodikkaval Krishna Iyer and Semmangudi Narayanaswamy Iyer. Shri Srinivasier received his training under a coterie of stalwarts in Karnatak music, namely, Semmangudi Narayanaswamy Iyer. Tiruvidaimaradur Sakharama Rao, Umayalpuram Swaminatha Iyer and Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer.
Apart from his work as a performer, Shri Srinivasier has, through the years, also contributed a great deal to the popularisation of the work of celebrated composers like Swati Tirunal. Muthuswami Dikshitar, Sadasiva Bhrahmendra, Narayana Teertha and Jaideva.
Shri Srinivasier has received honours from many distinguished bodies, including the Sangeet Kalanidhi of the Madras Music Academy, the Isai Perarigner of the Tamil Isai Sangam, and the Padma Bhushan. In his music career, spanning over 50 years, Shri Srinivasier has held eminent positions, such Asthana Vidwan of Travancore State, Principal of the Swati Tirunal College of Music, Trivandrum, and Honorary Director of the Central College of Music, Madras. For his eminence in the field of Music and his contribution to its enrichment, Semmangudi Shri R. Srinivasier has been elected Fellow of the Akademi.
