Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay

I present to you, Sir, Smt. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay. Shrimati Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay was born in Mangalore. An active and inspired worker from her younger days, Smt. Kamaladevi has played a significant role in the cultural renaissance in the country, and this includes her sizeable SANGEET NATAK AKADEMI FELLOWS 12 contribution to the theatre movement. She was the very first among educated women in India to appear on the public stage and to tour with a drama troupe all over the country to popularise theatre. Smt. Kamaladevi is Founder- President of the National Theatre Centre of India, which is affiliated to the International Theatre Institute of UNESCO. Smt. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay has represented India at a number of international conferences and served with distinction as head of several important Government and private boards and committees. She has also been Vice- Chairman of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. Smt. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay has toured and lectured extensively. She has also authored a number of books, papers and articles. In her long and distinguished career Smt. Chattopadhyay has received many national and international honours, which include the Watumall Foundation Award, the Ramon Magsaysay International Award, the Desikottama from Viswabharati and the Padma Bhushan. For her eminence in the field of Theatre and her contribution to its enrichment Smt. Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay has been elected Fellow of the Akademi.
