Musiri Subramania Iyer



I present to you, Sir, Musiri Shri Subramania Iyer. Born in 1899 at Musiri, Madras State, Shri Subramania Iyer received his training under great musicians like Namakkal Narasimha Iyengar, Karur Chinnaswamy Iyer and Sabesa Iyer. One of the leading vocalists of the Karnatak system, Shri Subramania Iyer has developed a style of his own. He is a distinguished music scholar and is recognised as an authority on the compositions of Sri Tyagaraja. Shri Subramania Iyer has made significant contribution to music education. He was the Principal of the Music College, Annamalai University and the Central College of Karnatak Music, Madras, and the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Kerala University. He was honoured as Sangeeta Kalanidhi by the Madras Music Academy and as Isai Perarinjar by the Tamil Isai Sangam, Madras. He is a Court Musician of Travancore and a Devasthana Vidwan of Tirupati. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Karnatak Vocal Music in 1957. For his eminence as a musician and scholar, Shri Subramania Iyer has been elected Fellow of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
