B. R. Deodhar

I present to you, Sir, Shri B.R. Deodhar. Born in 1902 in Miraj, Shri Deodhar had his training in Hindustani vocal music under Pt. Nilkanthbua Jangam, Vishnu Digambar Paluskar and Ustad Sendhekhan. Today he is one of the leading personalities in the field of music education in India. Shri Deodhar is the founder and Principal of the School of Indian Music, Bombay. He has been the Chairman of the Gandharva Maha Vidyalay Mandal since 1952. For some time he was Principal of the College of Music and Fine Arts and Dean of the Faculty of Music at Banaras Hindu University. At present he is head of the Department of Music, Banasthali Vidyapith, Rajasthan. Shri Deodhar is Chief Editor of ‘Sangeet Kala Vihar’, one of the leading journals devoted to music in India published in Hindi and Marathi. He has to his credit several publications on music, including a number of biographies of eminent musicians. He has represented India at various international conferences. Of late, he has been devoting particular attention to the science of voice culture, a subject on which he has done extensive studies and research. For his learned and devoted services to Music, the Sangeet Natak Akademi has elected Shri Deodhar a Fellow of the Akademi.
