Bishwa Bandhu



Born on 23 November 1930 in Patna, Shri Bishwa Bandhu received his training in the folk dances of Bihar under Ram Jiwan and his training in creative dance under Uday Shankar.
A veteran performer, he has travelled extensively on the Inter-State Cultural Exchange Programme conducted by Sangeet Natak Akademi, presenting Bihar’s folk dance in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Karnataka. Shri Bishwa Bandhu has earlier performed under the banner of the Indian People’s Theatre Association in Patna, directed dance for IPTA, and choreographed many dance-dramas. He has also directed presentations by folk dance troupes elsewhere, travelling to several towns and cities in the country. Foreign tours have taken him to the United States and other countries. He has established the cultural organization Surangan to propagate the dance of his region.
Shri Bandhu has received several honours for his work including the Nagarjun Shikhar Samman conferred by the Bihar Kala Shree Puraskar Parishad, and the Bihar Kalakar Samman bestowed by the Department of Art, Culture and Youth, Government of Bihar.
Shri Bishwa Bandhu receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore award for his contribution to the folk dance of Bihar.
