Gopiram Borgayan



Born on 1 January 1925 in Namkatani Gaon, Assam, Shri Gopiram Borgayan was groomed in the traditional music of the region – the monastic Borgeet, Ojapalli and other forms of Sattras – by eminent teachers including Giuram Ozha, Khageswar Gayan, Bholanath Namlogowa, Sonaram Borbayan, Chandradhar Sarmah Bhagwati, and Anandiram Borgayan.
He has performed in the traditional setting of Vaishnava monasteries for most of his life as a musician, and won renown for the spirit of his songs. With Sattriya dance and music traveling beyond Assam, Shri Gopiram Borgayan has performed also in festivals elsewhere in India, attracting new audiences to these monastic arts. He has trained a number of students over the years and propagated the Sattriya arts. He has many recordings to his credit.
Shri Gopiram Borgayan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore Award for his contribution to the traditional music of Assam.
