Born in 1925 in Damaher, Himachal Pradesh, Shrimati Gambhari Devi is one of the
leading singers of traditional songs of Himachal Pradesh.
Her music, rooted in the soil of the region, has been presented chiefly in fairs and
festivals, where it has won over listeners across the State. With programmes of
traditional music being organized both within and outside Himachal Pradesh,
Shrimati Gambhari Devi has been able to take her music to newer audiences, and
has propagated it also through radio and television. Hers is a well-known voice on
All India Radio and Doordarshan. For her service to folk music, Shrimati Gambhari
Devi has been awarded the Kala Samman by the Himachal Academy of Arts,
Culture and Languages, Shimla.
Shrimati Gambhari Devi receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore Award for her
contribution to the folk music of Himachal Pradesh.
