Abungbam Kabui



Born on 23 November 1929 in Imphal, Shri Abungbam Kabui was initiated into the dance and music of the Kabui tribe by Khoisi Golmei, Lungang Golmei, and Kadun Chundu. A proficient performer of the traditional dance of the region, Shri Abungbam Kabui has participated in numerous festivals of folk culture. Formerly a teacher of Kabui dance at the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal, he has travelled extensively with the JNMDA dance troupe to perform in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Shillong and Panaji. He has served JNMDA for many years, retiring as Vice-Principal in 1993. He was among the founding members of the Manipur State Kala Akademi, serving on its first Executive Board. Outside of these responsibilities, Shri Kabui has published a book in Manipuri titled Manipurda Kabuigi Jagoi (1980).
For his service to traditional arts, Shri Abungbam Kabui has received honours which include the Manipur State Kala Akademi Award, the Manipur Sahitya Parishad Award, and the Akhil Manipur Kalakar Sammelan Award.
Shri Abungbam Kabui receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore award for his contribution to the tribal dance of Manipur.
