Born on 21 August 1926 in Indore, Shrimati Jaymala Jayram Shiledar is a veteran of the Marathi
Sangeet Natak. She made her debut as a singer actress in the play Veshantar at the age of sixteen under
the guidance of Govindrao Tembe, a stalwart of the musical theatre. Her acting skills were honed by
other famous stage artists of the time, Chitubua Gurav, Ganpatrao Bodas, and Damuanna Malvankar
among others. Working with the Rajaram Sangeet Mandal, she had the opportunity to perform her
legendary roles of Sharada and Subhadra. She also worked with the Prabhakar Sangeet Mandal and
Kala Vikas Sanstha.
Teaming up with Shri Jayram Shiledar, she founded the Marathi Rang Bhoomi in 1949 and the duo began to present performances blending mudra-abhinaya with music. Besides Govindrao Tembe, her teachers in Hindustani music and Natyasangeet were Mohan Rao Palekar, Mogubai Kurdikar, Master Krishnarao, and Manohar Barve. Through her long career on the stage, Shrimati Shiledar has performed leading roles in dozens of musicals. She has given 4,500 performances in plays and presented over 3,500 solo mehfils. She continues to train students in Sangeet Natak.
Shrimati Shiledar has been President of the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Sammelan, and has been honoured with various awards in the field. These include the Balgandharva Puraskar, Vishnudas Bhave Puraskar, Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Puraskar, and the Lata Mangeshkar Puraskar. A noted artist of the Gandharva parampara, she has been awarded several Balgandharva Puraskars.
Shrimati Jaymala Jayram Shiledar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore Award for her contribution to Indian theatre as an actress.
