Born on 13 September 1932 in Pune, Maharashtra, Shrimati Prabha Atre received her training in
Hindustani classical vocal music from Shri Sureshbabu Mane and Shrimati Hirabai Badodekar of the
Kirana gharana. She has also learnt Kathak dance and has received training in musical dramas.
Both as a performer and teacher, Shrimati Prabha Atre has pursued a serious career in music. She has
served All India Radio as an Assistant Producer of Music, and was Professor and Head of the Department
of Music at S.N.D.T. Women’s University, Mumbai. She has also been a Visiting Professor at the
Rotterdam Conservatory, Netherlands; the University of California; the Music Conservatory,
Switzerland, and other universities.
Shrimati Prabha Atre has been a regular broadcaster and has a large number of gramophone records and cassettes to her credit. Shrimati Atre has trained a number of students. She has authored and published many books on music such as Swaramayee, Antahswar, Along the Path of Music, and Enlightening the Listener, etc.
Among other honours, Shrimati Prabha Atre has received the Kalidas Samman from the Government of Madhya Pradesh, the Padma Bhushan Award conferred by the Government of India, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
Shrimati Prabha Atre is elected Tagore Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi for her contribution to Indian music.
