Tanjavur Sankara Iyer



Born on 14 January 1924 in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, Shri Tanjavur Sankara Iyer received his training in Carnatic vocal music from renowned musicians including Tiger Varadachariyar, Sattur Krishna Iyengar, and T.K. Rengachari. He also learnt the Veena from K. S. Narayanaswamy and Gomathisankara Iyer.
Shri Sankara Iyer has presented his music at prestigious music festivals in India and abroad, and has besides sung on a regular basis over All India Radio and Doordarshan. He has issued many recordings of his music and contributed to seminars and workshops.
For his service to music over long years, Shri Sankara Iyer has been honoured by leading sabhas and the Government of Tamil Nadu. He is a recipient of the Kalaimamani conferred by Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram.
Shri Tanjavur Sankara Iyer receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore Award for his contribution to Carnatic vocal music.
