G Gourakishore Sharma



Born on 15 April 1936 in Keirao village in Manipur, Shri Gourakishor Sharma is a master of Thangta, the traditional martial art of Manipur. He was trained in Thang-ta at a young age by his father G. Sanajaoba Sharma, and later groomed by teachers such as Angom Leiren Singh, Hijam Ibohal Singh, Mutum Maipak Singh, Chandambam Birahari Singh, Lairenmayum Damu Singh, P. Tarango Singh, Ph. Shambru Singh, Toijam Birahari Singh, and R.K. Sanahal Singh. He won a name for himself for his skill and grasp of the art, and established the Huyen Lallong Manipuri Thang-ta Cultural Association in 1958. Here he began to explore various aspects of Thang-ta.
He developed a systematic training course in Thang-ta, and has groomed talented young students in the art. He has travelled and performed widely to conduct performances and present group works in Thang-ta. He has assisted the Manipur State Kala Akademi in producing a documentary film on Thang-ta.
Shri Gourakishor received a royal honour during the reign of Maharaja Bodhachandra of Manipur. The title of Huyen Lanjang Thouba was conferred on him by the Akhil Manipur Kalakar Sammelan. He has received the Kala Ratna from Manipur Sahitya Parishad and the Padma Shri from the Government of India. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his achievement in the martial arts of Manipur in 1983.
Shri Gourakishor Sharma is elected Tagore Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi for his contribution to Indian dance.
