Born in 1925 in Belgaum in a family of musicians Shrimati Shobha Gurtu received her initial training in Hindustani vocal music from her mother Menaka- bai Shirodkar of the Atrauli- Jaipur gharana. She later receiv- ed advanced training from Ustads Natthan Khan and Ghamman Khan as also Narayan Nath Gurtu. Shrimati Shobha Gurtu has distinguished herself on the concert platform as a fine exponent of light classical music. She has a wide repertoire of thumri, tappa, dadra composi-tions as also ghazals and bhajans which she renders with feeling. A popular broadcaster, she has a large number of gramophone records to her credit. For her eminence in music and her contribution to its enrichment Shrimati Shobha Gurtu receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani vocal music.
