Born in 1943 in village Charapara, district Kendrapara, Odisha, Shri Laxmidhar Rout received his initial training in Pala from Guru Damodar Sarangi, followed by training under Guru Baishnaba Charan Pradhan. Since his childhood, Shri Rout has presented innumerable Pala performances throughout the States of Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal and various Pala Peetha(s) of the country. Shri Laxmidhar Rout has trained many young students in Pala singing integrating the folklores with extensive knowledge of Vedas and various Sanskrit texts and treatises. For his dedication to the dissemination and pedagogy of Pala singing, Pala Pratishthan and other similar institutions such as Shree Jagannath Pala Research Foundation, Bhubaneswar; Shree Nilachala Nikhila Utkala Pala Parishad, Kendrapara, Odisha, have engaged his services to promote and reinvigorate the art form. Based on the fundamental principles and contents of the art form, he has also authored a book titled Udaharana Sataka. Shri Laxmidhar Rout has been honoured with several titles and awards in recognition of his talent including the Jayadeva National Award from the Jayadev Council for Development of Culture; the Naba Ratana Samman by the State Council for Artistic Research and Training, Odisha; and the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. Shri Laxmidhar Rout receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to the folk music of Odisha.
