R. K. Sreekanthan



Born on 14 January 1920 in Rudrapatna, Karnataka, Shri R.K. Srikantan received his initial training in Carnatic music from his father R. Krishnasastry, an eminent Harikatha artist, and later learnt from R.K. Venkataramasastry and M. Subramanya Iyer. He also learnt from Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. An artist of All India Radio, he has performed in many prestigious music festivals both in India and abroad. Shri R.K. Srikantan has trained a number of students such as Shrimati Suma Sudhindra (veena), Shri Shashank (flute), Shrimati Nalina Mohan (violin), and Shri Rudrapatnam S. Ramakanth (vocal). He has published many books on music such as Purandara Kriti Ratna Mala, Haridasa Kriti Ratna Mala, etc.
Shri Srikantan has received various titles and awards including the Sangeetha Kalanidhi by Music Academy, Chennai; an honorary Doctorate from Bangalore University; the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award; and the Padma Bhushan. He has many recordings to his credit. Shri R.K. Srikantan is elected Tagore Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi for his overall contribution to Indian music.
