Sripada Pinakapani



Born on 3 August 1913 in Priya village of Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh, Dr Pinakapani is a medical doctor by profession, who retired from government service in 1968 as Professor of Medicine, Kurnool Medical College, Andhra Pradesh. However, Shri Pinakapani has devoted a great part of his life to the study and practice of Carnatic vocal music. He received his training from Shri Mysore B.S. Lakshmana Rao, Shri Venkataswami Naidu and Shri Rangaramanuja Iyengar. An outstanding teacher, he has trained a number of renowned vocalists of Andhra Pradesh such as Shri Nookala Chinna Satyanarayana and Shri Nedunuri Krishnamurthy.
Shri Sripada Pinakapani has performed in many prestigious music festivals in India and abroad. He has published many books on music like Manodharma Sangeetham, Sangeetha Sowrabham, Pallavi Ganasudha and Naa Sangeetha Yatra.
He has received many prestigious titles and awards including the Kalaprapoorna (doctorate of Andhra University), the Saptagiri Sangeetha Vidwanmani by the Tirupati Devasthanam, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1977), the Sangeetha Kalanidhi by Madras Music Academy, Madras, and the Padma Bhushan (1984).
Shri Sripada Pinakapani is elected Tagore Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi for his contribution to Indian music.
