M. Nagabhushana Sarma



Born on 24 July 1935 in the village of Dhulipudi in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, Shri M. Nagabhushana Sarma has contributed to the performing arts as a playwright, director, actor, researcher, critic, teacher and editor. With many decades of experience in teaching and academic administration, Shri Sarma has held positions as head of departments and dean in several universities. He obtained his M.A. and PhD from Osmania University, Hyderabad, and an M.F.A. with specialization in direction at the University of Illinois, USA. He has also received post-graduate diplomas in Linguistics and the Teaching of English.
Shri Nagabhushana Sarma's writings cover theatre, puppetry, dance, and folk performances of Andhra Pradesh. He has published books on the Telugu actor Bellary Raghava, on the Surabhi Theatre of Andhra Pradesh, the Folk Performing Arts of Andhra Pradesh, and the History and Culture of the Andhras. His book on Tolu Bommalata: The Shadow Puppet Theatre of Andhra Pradesh was published by Sangeet Natak Akademi. He has besides contributed to various periodicals including Indian Literature and Sangeet Natak. His entries on Telugu theatre have been published in the Oxford Companion to Indian Theatre and the Oxford Encyclopedia of Theatre and Performance. His plays in Telugu include Vishadantam, Raja Oedipus, and Andha Yugam. He is currently researching the history of the Telugu musical drama with assistance from Sangeet Natak Akademi. The dance journal Nartanam published from Hyderabad marks his contribution to dance studies.
Shri Sarma has directed many plays in English for the group Dramatic Circle in Hyderabad. He has also directed and acted in a number of plays in Telugu. He has travelled to Europe and the United States for his studies and performances. He has been a member of the Executive Boards of Sangeet Natak Akademi and the National School of Drama in Delhi. He has served also on the Executive Council of the University of Hyderabad and the Senate of the Osmania University.
Shri M. Nagabhushana Sarma is elected Tagore Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi for his contribution to Indian theatre.
