Born on 11 January 1977 in Burdwan, West Bengal, Shrimati Shreeparna Bhanja Gupta
has studied puppetry under Shri Swapan Roy from 1988-2002, and then under Shri
Sudip Gupta of Dolls Theatre, Kolkata from 2003 onwards. She has also trained in
Music and Drawing. She has an M.A. in Sociology from the University of Burdwan,
where puppetry was the subject of her dissertation.
Shrimati Shreeparna Bhanja Gupta has been working in the field of puppetry since 1988. After joining Dolls Theatre as a full-time puppeteer, she has been actively involved in making puppets, scripting, music and animation. She has also directed puppet plays and conducted many workshops as a trainer. Some of the Dolls Theatre productions she has participated in are Padmagatha, Nak Kata Raja, Shatranj Ke Khiladi, and Saheb Bagander Sundari, to name a few. She has participated in numerous puppet festivals, some of which are Putul Tamasha by East Zone Cultural Centre, Kolkata 2015; Harmony World Puppet Carnival, Bangkok, Thailand 2014; Putul Yatra, Shillong, Meghalaya 2014; AHA! International Children’s Theatre Festival, Rangashankhara, Bangalore, 2013, among others.
Shrimati Shreeparna Bhanja Gupta has received a Junior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture for the year 2013-15 to undertake research on ‘Re-socialization and Mainstreaming of Juvenile Delinquents through Puppetry’. She is an executive member of Dolls Theatre, Kolkata, where many of the plays she has directed have themes such as awareness generation about AIDS, Thalassemia and environmental conservation.
Shrimati Shreeparna Bhanja Gupta is awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar of Sangeet Natak Akademi for 2013-2014 for her notable talent in the field of Puppetry.
