Akhila Ramnarayan



Born on 9 December 1973 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Shrimati Akhila Ramnarayan learnt theatre, movement and music from her parents Gowri Ramnarayan and Venkatraman Ramnarayan at a very young age. She has a B.A. and M.A. degree in English from Chennai. After completing her PhD in English Literature from Columbia Ohio University, USA, she returned to India and has been acting in theatre, as well as scripting, designing and choreographing plays. Working with Gowri Ramnarayan, the founder of JustUs Repertory, Chennai, she has toured extensively both in India and abroad. She has shared the stage with veteran actors and musicians such as Dhritiman Chatterjee, T.M. Krishna, Bombay Jayashri, Sheejith Krishna and Anita Ratnam.
Shrimati Akhila Ramnarayan has acted in many Tamil, English and Sanskrit plays directed by Gowri Ramnarayan and other directors. Some of the prominent plays she has acted in include Flame of the Forest, Water Lilies, Dark Horse, One Day in Ashaadh, Rural Fantasy, Mathemagician, Sarp- Sootra, Subverse, Yashoda and Night's End. She has also scripted many plays and texts for theatre. These include Don Quixote (as a music-dance theatre piece), Yathadarshi Tathamani (on concepts from the Upanishads), and Swadesh (created especially for a performance in London and Liverpool). She is a member of JustUs Repertory and Sahrdaya Foundation, Chennai. She has also trained in Carnatic vocal music.
Shrimati Akhila Ramnarayan is awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar of Sangeet Natak Akademi for 2013-2014 for her notable talent as an actor.
