Born on 1 February 1933 in Bhagalpur, Bihar, Shri Buddhadev Das Gupta received his training in
Sarod under Radhika Mohan Maitra of the Senia gharana and later from Jnan Prakash Ghosh.
Shri Buddhadev Das Gupta has carried out research on the technique of Sarod-playing, and has
worked on the analysis of ragas. Over the years he has developed a distinctive style. He is a recipient
of a National Fellowship from the Department of Culture, Government of India, and has lectured
on subjects like the methodology of teaching Indian classical music, and Sarod gharanas of India in
important national and international seminars. He has distinguished himself as an eminent guru
and has trained a number of students.
Shri Buddhadev Das Gupta has performed in many prestigious music festivals in India and abroad. He has been associated with institutions such as the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata as an expert in the Empirical Musicology Department.
He has been awarded many awards and titles including a Doctorate in Literature by Burdwan University, West Bengal, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1993), and the Padma Bhushan (2012) conferred by the Government of India. He has a large number of recordings to his credit. Shri Buddhadev Das Gupta is elected Tagore Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi for his contribution to Indian music.
