Born on 2 April 1971 in Kovilpatti in Thoothukudi district of
Tamil Nadu, Shri S. Murugaboopathy belongs to a family of
writers. An M.A. in Drama and Theatre Art from Pondicherry
University, Puducherry, Shri Murugaboopathy has also
completed his M.A. in Tamil Literature, besides M.Phil. and
PhD in Drama from Tamil University, Thanjavur. He has also
received training in various branches of the performing arts
such as the traditional theatre form of Therukoothu from
Purusai Kannappathambiraan. Shri Murugaboopathy also
plays musical instruments such as the Didgeridoo, the
Kokkarai, and the flute. He is presently working as a drama
teacher in TVS Metric School, Aaviyoor, Virudhunagar, Tamil
Nadu since 2003.
Shri Murugaboopathy's association with theatre began in the
year 1986 when he acted in the play Halla Bol directed by
him for Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers Association,
Kovilpatti. He wrote and directed his first play titled Kalvi for
Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers' Association, Kovilpatti, in
1986. Shri Murugaboopathy has so far written and staged
more than 16 major plays, out of which 7 have been
published also. Some of his most prominent plays are
Soorpanangu (2012), Mirugavithusagam (2010), and
Sarithirathin Atheetha Museum (1994). A well-known
director, Shri Murugaboopathy has written more than 30
plays for children, almost all of which have been staged.
Shri Murugaboopathy is the recipient of a senior fellowship
in theatre arts from the Ministry of Culture, Government of
India. His collection of seven plays, Koondhal Nagaram, has
been adjudged Best Book by the Tirupoor Tamil Sangam.
Shri S. Murugaboopathy receives the Ustad Bismillah Khan
Yuva Puraskar for the year 2011 for his notable talent in
playwriting in Tamil.
