Born on 14 January 1978 at Imphal, Shrimati Gurumayum
Chandan Devi received her training in Manipuri dance at
Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal, and
obtained her P.G. Diploma in Ras and Laiharaoba.
Subsequently, she studied other elements of Manipuri
dance under Th. Babu Singh, Th. Suryamukhi Devi,
Thauranisabi Devi, Th. Chaotombi Singh, N. Amusana Devi
and W. Lokendrojit Singh. Shrimati Chandan also received
training in Thang-ta under G. Sana Sharma. She is a
recipient of the National Scholarship from the Ministry of
Culture, Government of India.
She has performed solo at various dance festivals such as Nritya Pratibha of Sangeet Natak Akademi, Jabalpur; Bhagyachandra Festival, Imphal; Festival of Classical Dance organized by Manipur State Kala Akademi; and Pragjyoti International Dance Festival, Guwahati. She joined the Production Unit of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) as a dancer in 1996, and played lead roles in the choreographies of the unit such as Bidai Abhishap, Meghdoot, Abhisarika, Khamnu, Radha Sati and Shakuntala. She has travelled extensively with the group of JNMDA performing at various festivals within the country and abroad, including Korea, Scotland, Kazakhstan and Bangladesh. Shrimati Chandan Devi has also acted in Manipuri films as lead actress and received critical acclaim for her roles in Helloy, Laibak and Nangse Eigini.
Shrimati Gurumayum Chandan Devi is awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar of Sangeet Natak Akademi for the year 2011 for her notable talent in the field of Manipuri dance.
