Born on 1 March 1975 at Majuli Island in Assam, Shri Bhabananda
Barbayan received his training in Sattriya dance and music at the Uttar
Kamalabari Sattra under several gurus such as Paramananda
Barbayan, Tuniram Barbayan, Baluram Bargayan, Gopiram Bargayan,
Cheniram Barbayan, and Kamal Bargayan.
Bhabananda Barbayan is among the established Sattriya dancers and
Khol players from Assam. He has performed widely within the country
in the prestigious festivals organized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi
such as Nritya Parva, Nritya Pratibha, Swarn Utsav, Nritya Sangam and
Sangeet Natak Akademi Award Festival, as well as in the Konark
Festival, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Dance Festival, Virashad Festival
and Uday Shankar Dance Festival. He has travelled within and outside
the country for performances and conducted workshops at Festival
Les Orientales, Saint-Florent-le-Vieil; Festival de Musique Sacree,
Abbaye de Sylvanes; Festival Autres Rivages, Uzes; Festival
International de Folklore d'Issoire; Festival Interfold, Le Pu-yen-Velay
in France; and Festival Les Orientales, Evora in Portugal; Rodez,
Toulouse, Montpellier in Paris; and Festival of India in China.
Shri Bhabananda Barbayan is awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva
Puraskar of Sangeet Natak Akademi for the year 2012 for his notable
talent in the field of Sattriya dance.
