K. Kesavasamy



Born on 20 April 1943 in T.R. Pattinam, Puducherry, Shri K. Kesavasamy started his career as a teacher in the Secondary schools of Puducherry State Government from where he retired as a Headmaster. He got attracted to Puppetry in the late seventies and received his initial training in Puppetry from Shri S. Kanagarethinam for two years (1978-1980). Shri Kesavasamy attended several workshops conducted for teachers by the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT), New Delhi between 1981 to 1997, and has also received training as a puppeteer in the Gurukula tradition at Kumbakonam Kalai Kovil Bommalatta Kuzhu, Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.
Shri K. Kesavasamy formed his own troupe, Karai Raman Creations in the year 1980, and has created and staged around 490 puppet plays. He has conducted more than 20 puppetry workshops in his gurukulam at Karaikal. Shri Kesavasamy is teaching the art of puppetry through South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur in various States including the Andaman Islands. Shri K. Kesavasamy is also holding the post of Secretary at the Sapthaswaram Music Academy, Karaikal, for the past 32 years. He has performed in several national puppetry festivals organized by Sangeet Natak Akademi. Special documentation has been done on him by NCERT, which was organized by CCRT. He was honoured by the Governments of Puducherry, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu with their State Teacher Award, and by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi with the National Best Teachers Award. He has also received the CCRT National Award for Teachers. Shri K. Kesavasamy has received many honours in puppetry, teaching and social work, namely, Kalaimamani, Kalabharathi, Kalaichithar, Kalai Chudar, Kamban Kalai Chudar, Kalai Thilangam, Innisai Thendral, Sarvo Jana Seva Sahara, Ezhisai Puravalar and Kalai Prerarasu.
Shri K. Kesavasamy receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2014 for his contribution to the Puppetry of Puducherry.
