Ravi Shankar

I present to you, Sir, Shri Ravi Shankar. Shri Ravi Shankar is one of the great music maestros of today, enjoying both national and international renown. He was born in 1920. Shri Ravi Shankar started his career as a dancer in the troupe of his brother, Uday Shankar. But he soon took to the Sitar, which he learnt for many years with Ali Akbar Khan. His work is distinguished for its crisp clarity and its high aesthetic content. Shri Ravi Shankar has contributed a great deal to orchestration in Indian music. He has evolved and established his own characteristic style of playing the Sitar and he has also created new ragas. Above all, he has played a very leading role in making Indian music widely known and appreciated abroad. Shri Ravi Shankar was for some time with All India Radio as Conductor of the Vadya Vrinda. He has performed at countless prestigious Music Conferences all over the world. For some years now he is running a School of Indian Music in Los Angeles. Shri Ravi Shankar’s work has won for him several laurels, including the Silver Bear Award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan. For his eminence in the field of Music and his contribution to its enrichment Shri Ravi Shankar has been elected Fellow of the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
