Born in 1944 in Chaulkora village in Dibrugarh district of Assam, Shri Umakanta Bairagi - ne Gogoi was groomed in the traditional Tokari Geet and Dehabichar Geet of Assam by his father Kanakeswar Gogoi .
In a career that spans forty years, Shri Bairagi has achieved eminence as a performer of Tokari and Dehabichar Geet. He has presented his art not only on religious occasions, where the music was formerly performed, but also at festivals of traditional arts all over the country. He has besides performed on All India Radio, Dibrugarh, regularly since 1969,and has late r sung from the Dibrugarh and Guwahati stations of Doordarshan. He has to his credit a large number of recordings of Tokari and Dehabichar Geet . He has trained a number of students over the years and has established an institution for that purpose in Guwahati, named Kanakeswar Gogoi Memorial Dehabichar/Tokari Geet Prashikshan Kendra, named after his father.
Shri Umakanta Bairagi has been honoured for his work by various institutions in Assam. He was bestowed the title Bairagiby All India Radio, Dibrugarh, in 1971.
Shri Umakanta Bairagi receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to the Tokari and Dehabichar Geet of Assam.
