Born in 1935 in Mannargudi, Tamil Nadu, Shrimati R. Vedavalli received training in Carnatic Vocal Music under Shri Madurai Srirangam Iyengar, Shri Mudicondon C. Venkataramaier, Shrimati T. Mukta, and Shri K.H. Mahadeva Bhagavatar. She has also received training in the Veena. A leading Carnatic vocalist, Shrimati Vedavalli is known for her pure, traditional style that has won her a following among discerning listeners. She is also a reputed musicologist, and has published her research in numerous journals. A distinguished teacher, she has taught at the Teachers' College of Music, the Music Academy, Madras, and at the Tamil Nadu Government Music College from 1980 to 1994. A top-grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, she has performed widely in India and abroad. She has many recordings to her credit. Shrimati Vedavalli has received several honours from institutions and Sabhas. These include the title Sangita Ratnakara, the Kalaimamani conferred by the Government of Tamil Nadu, the Sangita Kalanidhi title of the Music Academy, Chennai, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. Shrimati R.Vedavalli is elected Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi for her contribution to Indian music.
