Born in 1938, Dr. Chandrasekhar Kambar is a leading poet, playwright and folklorist in Kannada. He has to his credit several plays, collections of poems, novels and research works on folkore. He is the recipient of several awards including the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi Award for Literature, the Kamala Devi Chattopadhy- aya Award for his play Jo Kumar Swamy and the Karnataka Sahitya Parishad Award for Drama. He was a Fulbright scholar in 1968 and taught in University of Chicago and attended international seminars on Indian Folkore. He has made several feature and docu- mentary films and has also composed music for them. His latest film Sangeetha was adjudged the best feature film in 1980-81 and won him awards for direction, music, story and dialogue. For his eminence in the field of theatre and his contribution to its enrichment, Dr. Chandra- sekhar Kambar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Playwriting for 1983.
