पद्मा सुब्रह्मण्यम

Daughter of the well known film director, K. Subrahmanyam and Smt. Meenakshi, a lyricist and composer, Kumari Padma Subrahmanyam was initially trained in Bharatanatyam by Vazhuvur Ramaiah Pillai and Mylapore Gouri Aroma. She studied music from Shri B.V. Lakshmanan and holds a Master’s Degree in Music. A performing artiste and a scholar, Kumari Padma has conducted extensive research in the Karana sculptures under the guidance of Dr. T.N. Ramachandran. She has received Ph.D. from the Annamalai University for her thesis ‘Karanas in Indian Dance and Sculpture’. She is the author of the book Bharata’s Art: Then and Now. She has incorporated the salient features of her research work in her dance compositions and has evolved an individual dance style in Bharatanatyam. She has choreographed many dance dramas and solo numbers She is the recipient of several awards and honours including the Kalaimamani from the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram and the Padmashri. For her eminence in the field of dance and her contribution to its enrichment, Dr. (Kumari) Padma Subrahmanyam receiv- es the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Bharatanatyam for 1983.
