Born in 1938 in Jammu, Shri Shiv Kumar Sharma was initiated into Hindustani classical music by his father Pandit Umadutt Sharma. Under his guidance Shri Shiv Kumar Sharma studied the Santoor and its potential as a classical instrument, effecting modifications that have aided its acceptance on the concert stage. One of the most popular of our classical musicians, Shri Shiv Kumar Sharma — an adherent of the Banaras Gharana — has performed widely at home and abroad. He has several gramophone records to his credit. Classical music apart, Shri Sharma has composed music for films. For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment Shri Shiv Kumar Sharma receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani Instrumental Music for 1986.
